NEW ORLEANS, La. — UTSA spotted Tulane a touchdown on the first snap Saturday night and then took over, forcing six turnovers and running for six scores in a 42-19 win at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans that keeps the Roadrunners perfect in American Conference play.
Both of those numbers matched UTSA school records. The defense recovered four fumbles, with Zach Morris, Camron Cooper, Elijah Newell and RJ Lester Jr. each grabbing one, and Morris and Willie Nelson III came up with interceptions. Jameian Buxton, a New Orleans native, forced a fumble in his return home, and Owen Pewee was a terror up front with three sacks. Ahamad Chapman paced the defense with six tackles, five of them without help, and Darion White chipped in five more as Tulane was held to 67 yards on the ground.
The early mistake came on the first play, when Tulane’s Anthony Rogers picked off a throw and went 22 yards the other way. UTSA answered with A’Marion Peterson runs of 1 and 16 yards, and Owen McCown added a 4-yard keeper for a 21-7 cushion. Tulane trimmed it to 21-13 by halftime on two field goals.
The Roadrunners put it away in the second half. Will Henderson III scored from 9 yards to cap a 72-yard drive and finished with 102 yards on 15 carries, his second 100-yard game this season. Brandon High Jr. ran in from 5 yards to end a 13-play march, and Mark Wiepert added the last touchdown. UTSA piled up 223 rushing yards and converted 12 of 16 third downs, while McCown threw for 173 yards.
The win, which ended Tulane’s 10-game winning streak at home, lifts UTSA to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the league. Tulane dropped to 3-4.
