SAN ANTONIO, Texas — With the Nov. 3 election closing in, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico brought his campaign to San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday, packing a downtown club with several hundred supporters.

The rally at 1902 Nightclub in St. Paul Square was a stop on his Clear Eyes, Full Hearts tour, and actress Eva Longoria warmed up the crowd before he took the stage. Supporters filled the room, stood along the stairs and leaned over the balcony railing.

Talarico, a state representative who once taught middle school in the San Antonio Independent School District, is facing Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton for the seat now held by Sen. John Cornyn. A Democrat has not won a statewide race in Texas since 1994.

Much of his speech went after Paxton’s financial backing, especially from Elon Musk. Campaign finance reports filed in September showed Musk steered $190 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, which is the main super PAC working for Senate Republicans and the largest spender in the Texas contest. Talarico said Texas is not for sale and tied rising living costs to the influence of big donors.

He pitched a ban on stock trading by members of Congress and changes to how campaigns are financed, and pointed to his work in the Legislature on property tax cuts, housing costs and insulin co-pay limits.

Paxton spent the same day with Sen. Ted Cruz in New Braunfels and then spoke in Georgetown. He laid out proposed tax deductions for home purchases and out-of-pocket medical costs, said the child tax credit should be doubled and branded Talarico as too radical for the state.

Both men closed by urging backers to vote early and get friends and neighbors to the polls before Election Day.
