SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Night drivers on San Antonio’s Northeast Side face detours this week as the Texas Department of Transportation closes pieces of the northbound I-35 frontage road for the I-35 Northeast Expansion Program.

The closures run Oct. 26-30, weather permitting. From Monday through Thursday, crews hold the roads 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.; on Friday the window moves later, 11 p.m. until 7 a.m.

One stretch, from Space Center Drive to Rittiman Road, shuts down each night. Drivers heading north there are sent right to Industry Park Drive and can rejoin the frontage road using the next on-ramp.

North of Rittiman Road, the frontage road and the Exit 164 B ramp also close nightly. Traffic that needs to keep going past Rittiman takes a right on Rittiman Road and a left on Fratt Road. People coming from Center Park Boulevard, Dinn Drive or Remount Drive are routed to Fratt Road and then Eisenhauer Road to reach the frontage road again.

Drivers on the main lanes who want Eisenhauer Road should stay on I-35 to Exit 165, make a U-turn at Walzem Road and come back on the southbound frontage road to Eisenhauer.

TxDOT said some of the closures may happen only at times within those overnight hours, so drivers should allow extra time.

The closures sit close to where I-35 meets Loop 410, one of the busiest interchanges on the city’s Northeast Side, and they are tied to the larger expansion program that is rebuilding that stretch of the interstate. Drivers who use the Rittiman, Fratt and Eisenhauer corridor late at night will feel the detours most, since each one adds turns and a few extra minutes to the trip back onto I-35.

Overnight closures of this kind are typically announced a week at a time, and new detours can be added as crews move along the corridor. Drivers who regularly use the Northeast Side frontage roads after dark should check for updated closure notices before heading out.
