SAN ANTONIO, Texas — UTSA football coach Jeff Traylor moved Monday to shut down talk that he could be headed to Baylor, saying he and his wife love San Antonio and that he intends to see his contract through.

Baylor fired Dave Aranda on Sunday after seven seasons, and Traylor’s name quickly landed near the top of many lists of possible replacements in Waco. Aranda went 40-40 with the Bears and won the 2021 Big 12 title, but Baylor was 9-10 over the last two years.

Speaking on a local radio program, Traylor said being linked to the opening is flattering. He joked that over his seven years in San Antonio he has supposedly been on his way to seven different schools. He is in the middle of a 10-year deal with UTSA that runs through 2031.

Traylor tied his future to progress on several fronts at the school, including revenue-sharing money for players, his staff and an indoor practice facility. As long as those projects keep moving forward, he said, he plans to ride out the full contract.

His stock has rarely been higher. UTSA crushed Tulane 42-19 on Saturday for a fifth straight win, forcing six turnovers and ending the Green Wave’s 10-game home winning streak. The Roadrunners ran for six touchdowns and outgained Tulane 223-67 on the ground.

Traylor carries a 58-27 record at UTSA since 2020. Before college coaching, the East Texas native spent 15 seasons at Gilmer High School, where he won three state championships, and at UTSA he has added back-to-back Conference USA titles to that resume.
