SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Republican U.S. Senate nominee Ken Paxton brought his campaign to San Antonio on Sunday, but not to the landmark his bus tour had been built around. Instead of a closing event at the Alamo, Paxton held a 6 p.m. rally at The Angry Elephant, 19314 Highway 281, on the city’s north side.

Paxton’s campaign had originally said the Come and Take It tour would wrap up at the Alamo on the eve of Election Day. He had built his closing argument around the site of the 1836 battle, a defeat for Texan forces during the revolution, casting himself as someone who fights back for Texans. By Saturday those plans appeared to be off. The campaign added Monday stops in Conroe at 11 a.m. and in Allen at 5:30 p.m., and no Monday event was listed in San Antonio.

The campaign did not explain the switch, and it had not answered earlier questions about how the Alamo event would work. The Alamo Trust, which manages the site, said it did not know of any plan for a Paxton event there, and the grounds generally do not allow political events.

Paxton, the state attorney general, faces Democrat James Talarico in one of the tightest and costliest Senate races in the country. Talarico, a 37-year-old Democrat from Austin, has run his own statewide get-out-the-vote swing. Paxton has leaned on big Texas rallies featuring Vice President JD Vance and President Donald Trump, while other stops on his late schedule in El Paso, Tyler, Texarkana and Mission were canceled or moved.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. The Senate race sits at the top of a ballot that also includes the governor’s race.
