SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A San Antonio man who worked as an Air Force contractor at Joint Base San Antonio made his first appearance before a federal judge in San Antonio on Monday, two days after his arrest on charges tied to a missing classified document and guns on the base.

Zachry Wade Carroll, 47, was taken into custody Saturday in Comal County. The FBI handled the case, and U.S. Attorney Justin Simmons of the Western District of Texas announced the charges, which his office is prosecuting.

An indictment accuses Carroll of misplacing a classified national defense document in April 2025 and failing to promptly let his supervisor know. Federal officials further allege that while on the job inside a secure area at the base’s Kelly Annex, he had a loaded .380 handgun on him, and that when he was asked if he was armed, he said no.

Officials say his vehicle, parked on the base, held two more weapons, an AR-15 rifle and a 9mm handgun, both of them loaded.

Carroll faces four counts in all. One accuses him of losing national defense information, another of making a false statement, and two more of having a gun inside a federal facility. The combined maximum is 17 years behind bars. If he is convicted, a federal district judge would set any sentence after weighing the federal sentencing guidelines and other factors. An indictment is only an accusation, and Carroll is presumed innocent unless a court finds him guilty.

The secure space where he worked is a room built for handling classified material. Prosecutors say the rifle in his vehicle was loaded and had 85 rounds and three magazines with it, while the 9mm had 20 rounds and three magazines. Federal officials have not said what the lost document contained.
