SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The San Antonio Missions are adding a second alter ego, and this one is named for the city’s favorite morning meal. The club will play as the San Antonio Breakfast Tacos for one weekend next spring.

The club says the Breakfast Tacos will first take the field on the weekend of April 16-18, 2027. The brand’s logo is a classic bean and cheese breakfast taco, and players will wear a jersey colored cast-iron black and refried brown. A costumed taco mascot, still without a name, also made its first appearance.

General manager David Gasaway tied the choice to the city’s mix of Mexican and American culture and called the breakfast taco the clearest sign of it. Team leaders revealed the brand Thursday at the ballpark with a video on the big screen, and staffers passed out tacos to the small crowd that turned out.

The new name does not replace the old ones. The Padres farm club will still suit up as the Flying Chanclas on Thursdays in 2027. That alternate brand first appeared in 2018, and its popularity helped push the club to look for another tribute to local culture. In its first year the Chanclas name was used only on select dates before it became a weekly fixture.

Team officials said the Breakfast Tacos are planned for that single April weekend for now, though they expect fans to have chances to weigh in on the brand. Merchandise is listed at sabreakfasttacos.com.

The Missions host opponents at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium and count 13 Texas League championships. The franchise traces its roots to 1888, and its main name already honors the Spanish missions that date to San Antonio’s founding roughly 300 years back.
