SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A fire that tore through a home on the northeast side of San Antonio, Texas, early Friday left one person dead and a second person in the hospital, and arson investigators are now working to learn how it started.
Crews from the San Antonio Fire Department were sent to the 200 block of Blakeley Drive a little after midnight on Friday, Oct. 23. The street sits in a neighborhood near Rittiman Road and Austin Highway. By the time the first engines pulled up, flames had engulfed the house, and two people and a dog were still inside.
Firefighters pulled one person out along with the family dog. Medics brought the survivor to Brooke Army Medical Center, where the patient was treated for breathing in smoke. The second person inside the home died at the scene.
The fire left the inside of the house badly damaged. Arson investigators with the fire department have taken over the case and are trying to pin down the cause. No cause had been announced as of Saturday morning.
Fire officials have not released the names or ages of the person who died or the person who survived, and they have not said how the two were related or how long the fire burned before crews arrived. The dog survived the blaze. The block sits in a residential pocket of the northeast side, a short drive from the Rittiman Road and Austin Highway corridors, where the department’s engine companies responded within minutes of the overnight call.
Residents with information about the fire can contact the San Antonio Fire Department. This story will be updated if officials release more details about the victims or the cause.
