San Antonio Emerges as Most Affordable City for Homebuyers in Texas

San Antonio has been recognized as the most affordable city in Texas for homebuyers, according to a recent analysis by WalletHub. The study evaluated 10 key metrics across 300 cities in the United States, taking into account vital aspects such as home costs, upkeep, tax rates, and vacancy rates, positioning San Antonio at the 163rd rank overall.

Other Texas cities did not fare as well in the affordability rankings, with Dallas ranked at 218, Houston at 190, and Austin notably lower at 224. Among larger cities in the dataset, San Antonio holds the No. 40 position, indicating its relative affordability compared to peers across the state. As of April 2025, data from Zillow reveals that the average home price in San Antonio stands at $257,632, illustrating a slight year-over-year decrease of 3.1% in home prices.

New Affordable Housing Developments Launched

Adding to its appeal, San Antonio has recently opened its second affordable housing complex known as Vista at Silver Oaks, located at 11333 Brazil Drive. This new development is conveniently situated minutes away from the San Antonio International Airport, the Medical Center, and the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).

The Vista at Silver Oaks was developed in collaboration with Opportunity Home San Antonio, Atlantic Pacific Companies, and OCI Development. It offers 76 new apartment units designed to accommodate a range of income levels, with specific allocations based on Area Median Income (AMI) requirements: 8 homes are available for families earning up to 30% AMI (approximately $23,900 annually), 22 homes at 50% AMI, and 46 homes at 60% AMI. For context, the AMI for a family of three in San Antonio is reported at $79,700.

Community Features and Support Programs

Vista at Silver Oaks not only provides affordable living space but also boasts a variety of amenities. Residents can enjoy access to a business center, fitness center, and community center, along with numerous educational and community support programs aimed at fostering sustainable living within the neighborhood.

In a complementary initiative, the city has also launched the Nova Lofts in District 10. This development features 65 individual units specifically designated for low and moderate-income families, where eight of the units are reserved for families earning below $23,900 a year. Both affordable housing projects exemplify the city’s commitment to addressing housing needs through strategic development funded by the 2022 Affordable Housing Bond.

Investment in Housing Affordability

The Affordable Housing Bond program has already invested over $115 million in creating and enhancing affordable housing options throughout San Antonio. This ongoing commitment reflects the city’s recognition of the critical need for affordable housing solutions as part of broader economic and social development efforts. Initiatives like these are essential for providing equitable housing opportunities and fostering thriving communities.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new affordable housing developments and community support programs is set to take place at 10 a.m. on the announcement day, marking a significant milestone in San Antonio’s pursuit of housing affordability. The concerted effort from local government and development partners underscores the goal of creating sustainable communities and ensuring that all residents have access to affordable living options.
