San Antonio – A devastating fire erupted at the Iron Horse Valley Apartments late Sunday night, displacing 25 residents and destroying 12 units. The blaze broke out around 10:30 p.m., prompting a swift response from local firefighters who managed to control the fire approximately 35 minutes later despite challenging weather conditions, including strong winds.

As flames engulfed the complex, many residents were forced to evacuate with little more than the clothes on their backs. Shada Daniels, who recently moved into her apartment with her boyfriend in March, shared her harrowing escape experience. She had to throw her nieces and nephews from the third floor to safety; thankfully, a neighbor was present to catch the children. Unfortunately, during her frantic exit, Daniels fell down the stairs, injuring herself due to smoke that obscured her view.

Despite the immediate danger, all residents were able to escape without reported injuries. Firefighters faced a daunting task with about 100 personnel on the scene, battling the fire under challenging conditions to prevent further damage. The American Red Cross is providing assistance to several affected families as they navigate their next steps.

Daniels, however, is grappling with significant loss. She reported that her family lost all their possessions in the fire and has no renters’ insurance to help with recovery. The apartment complex has since terminated her lease and has only offered a $400 refund of their initial payment for moving in, adding to the stress of recovery and relocation. The complex managers have declined to comment on the situation.

Firefighters have temporarily housed displaced families, including Daniels, in a motel for five nights. Nevertheless, she expressed uncertainty about her long-term housing options as the situation remains fluid. Another resident, Priscilla Mora, described a similar experience, escaping with only her clothes as the fire consumed their home.

This is not the first time the Iron Horse Valley Apartments have experienced a major fire. An earlier incident in July 2023 resulted in the destruction of eight units. Investigators are currently probing the cause of the latest fire, seeking answers for both residents and concerned community members.

The fire incident highlights pressing concerns over safety protocols and fire prevention measures at high-density housing complexes like Iron Horse Valley Apartments. As more residents face the challenges of displacement, securing long-term housing and resources becomes a priority during this difficult time.
