San Antonio – An 18-year-old man was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at Glenoaks Elementary School on Thursday morning. Law enforcement responded to a call regarding a body on campus shortly after 7 a.m., prompting an investigation into the incident.

The unidentified individual was discovered near a portable building adjacent to the playground area of the school located at 5103 Newcome Drive. Authorities are treating the incident as a potential suicide, particularly as the young man had been reported missing by his mother earlier that same day. During the missing person report, the mother noted that her handgun was also unaccounted for, raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding her son’s death.

Despite the tragic event, Glenoaks Elementary School continued its operations, although access within the building was limited while law enforcement conducted their investigation. An official from the Northside Independent School District (NISD) confirmed that the case is unrelated to any students or staff at the school.

Safety Precautions in Place

In response to the incident, Principal Laura Galindo sent an email to families, informing them about the occurrence. The school was placed on a brief lockdown followed by a secure status as a precautionary measure. This secure status allowed students to remain indoors, with their schedules maintained as closely to normal as possible. Principal Galindo expressed her condolences to the family of the deceased and assured families that support would be available for students requiring assistance.

Witness Account

A bystander, identified as Josaiah Ruiz, reported hearing crying near the area where the body was located while he was walking his sister to school. Fortunately, his sister did not witness the event, highlighting the importance of maintaining a routine for students amid the unsettling situation.

Investigation Details

The body was found under an awning on the school campus, and officials have confirmed that the teenager was not affiliated with Glenoaks Elementary School. As the investigation continues, police have not revealed how the young man gained access to the school grounds.

Local officials, including Karla Duran, a board member for Northside ISD, reiterated that the deceased was not a student at Glenoaks Elementary. This detail has been emphasized throughout the investigation to alleviate concerns among parents and the school community regarding the safety and security of students.
