The decision comes after a lengthy six-hour closed session, where the board evaluated various financial strategies to combat the ongoing financial crisis.

Among the board’s decisions, they unanimously voted 7-0 to eliminate vacant positions within the district, which includes roles such as a wellness and leave specialist, a district social worker, academic coaches and trainers, and two positions in the communications department. Additionally, in a 6-1 vote, the board decided to remove pre-kindergarten programming for 3-year-olds due to the financial strain.

In a more impactful move, athletic programs, including golf and powerlifting, will be removed from the district’s offerings because of low student participation rates. This decision reflects the district’s need to make serious cuts in multiple areas as it grapples with budget constraints.

Previously, Judson ISD had considered closing three campuses—Judson Middle School, Candlewood Elementary School, and Franz Leadership Academy. However, after receiving feedback from the community, the board opted to keep those campuses open. This decision was made in light of the significant community impact and the importance of these schools within their neighborhoods.

The tightening financial situation at Judson ISD mirrors trends seen in other districts in Texas and across the United States. The San Antonio Independent School District is currently implementing its own budget cuts, which have included the closure of multiple campuses due to financial restrictions. Similarly, the North East Independent School District has announced the closure of three campuses, attributing this to a $62.5 million budget deficit largely linked to declining enrollment and issues with state funding.

Despite recent funding approvals from the Texas legislature, which allocated $8.5 billion for public schools in the state for 2025—with plans to increase per-student funding and teacher salaries—the financial challenges facing these districts remain substantial. The new funding measure also allows families to use up to $10,000 of public tax dollars per student for private school tuition and related expenses, further complicating the financial landscape for public schools.

The decisions made by Judson ISD’s board are part of a broader effort to stabilize the district amid ongoing financial audits. These audits have revealed the gravity of the district’s budgeting and funding issues. The recently hired financial consultant played a role in guiding the board through these complex decisions, emphasizing the necessity for difficult choices as enrollment numbers continue to decline and state funding becomes increasingly unpredictable.
