Emergency responders conducting rescues during severe flooding in San Antonio

News Summary

San Antonio experiences a catastrophic flooding event caused by over 7 inches of rain in just a few hours, leading to 11 confirmed fatalities and numerous missing persons. Rescue operations are underway as the community grapples with the aftermath of this severe weather disaster. Authorities are working tirelessly to locate missing individuals and provide support to those affected, while flood warnings remain in place for the region.

San Antonio, Texas – A severe flooding event has claimed the lives of 11 individuals as the search for missing persons continues in San Antonio. The tragedy unfolded on Thursday when over 7 inches (18 cm) of rain fell within a matter of hours, resulting in fast-rising floodwaters that swept away numerous vehicles into Beitel Creek.

Search and rescue operations are currently focused on low-water crossings and other areas where multiple vehicles have become submerged. The San Antonio Fire Department has conducted over 70 water rescues, many of which involved individuals trapped in stalled vehicles or climbing trees in an attempt to escape the rising waters. Notably, at least 10 people were rescued from bushes and trees located approximately a mile away from their vehicles.

Among the confirmed casualties are Victor Manuel Macias Castro, aged 28, Matthew Angel Tufono, 51, and Martha De La Torre Rangel, 55. Three of the deceased individuals were between the ages of 28 and 55 years old. One person still unaccounted for is Stevie Richards, 42, who reportedly called his wife while his car was being swept away by the floodwaters.

Flood warnings are currently in effect for specific regions of the San Antonio River and Cibolo Creek, and these alerts are expected to remain until the weekend. As emergency response efforts continue, authorities are working alongside canine units and a specialized search and rescue team from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to locate those still missing.

The torrential downpour has resulted in substantial damage throughout the area, including the sweeping away of 15 vehicles into rapidly rising waters. River levels increased dramatically, escalating from around 3 feet to over 25 feet within just two hours. In addition to the flooding, the National Weather Service reported that two tornadoes touched down in Hays County during the storms.

Typically, the San Antonio area sees about 3 inches of rain throughout June, making Thursday’s rainfall significantly above normal levels. Current forecasts suggest the possibility of isolated thundershowers over the coming days, with temperatures expected to soar up to 107°F.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic flooding event, the mayor of San Antonio, Ron Nirenberg, has extended condolences to the families of the victims and emphasized the need for continued support and vigilance as rescue and recovery efforts proceed. Emergency responders remain on high alert as they work tirelessly to assist those still affected by this severe weather event.

Ongoing rescue operations and searches are essential as several individuals have yet to be accounted for, underscoring the urgency of the situation in San Antonio as the impact of this devastating flooding becomes clearer.
