San Antonio – At least 11 individuals have lost their lives as a result of severe flooding that struck the city following intense thunderstorms. The search for several missing persons is currently ongoing as local authorities and rescue teams intensify their efforts in the affected areas.

The devastating flooding began early on Thursday when heavy rainfall, caused by an upper-level trough, resulted in approximately 8 inches of rain in various parts of San Antonio between midnight and 4 a.m. This extreme weather event was further characterized by the occurrence of two confirmed tornadoes in nearby Hays County, which caused additional tree damage and minor structural issues.

Reports indicate that around 15 vehicles were swept away by the rapidly rising waters near Perrin Beitel Road, prompting an urgent response from emergency services. Fire officials confirmed that 10 individuals were successfully rescued from the floodwaters, while two others managed to escape and walk away from danger.

Since the onset of the flooding, over 70 water rescues have been conducted, with search operations primarily focusing on Salado Creek close to Perrin Beitel Road and Leon Creek near U.S. Highway 90. The San Antonio Fire Department is working closely with local police and Texas A&M Task Force 1 to coordinate efforts in locating the missing individuals.

Initial estimates suggested that about three individuals were unaccounted for; however, the number of those missing is subject to change as ongoing searches and confirmations take place. Angela Richards reported that her husband, 42-year-old Steve Richards, has not been heard from since he encountered rising waters while driving to work.

The flooding has caused significant disruptions, with the city experiencing damage to 15 of its 141 low-water crossings. In addition, 18 roadways were closed due to flooding, debris, or surface damage. Residents have been alerted to the risks associated with low-water crossings, particularly in light of the San Antonio Police Chief’s warnings about the dangers posed by the swift rise of creek waters.

Currently, San Antonio remains under flood warnings, especially concerning areas near the San Antonio River and Cibolo Creek, which are expected to exceed their banks as conditions worsen. Mayor Ron Nirenberg has extended condolences to the families of the victims and has expressed hope for the safe return of those who are still missing. The weather forecast indicates isolated thundershowers and a potential high temperature of 107 degrees on Friday, further complicating recovery efforts.

Rescue teams have been deploying resources across various creek beds and low-water crossings, while multiple accidents have been reported as a direct consequence of the flooding. The community is urged to remain vigilant and to heed safety warnings as search and rescue operations continue to unfold in the wake of this tragic event.

As the situation develops, local officials are closely monitoring the weather and its impact on the region, prioritizing the safety and well-being of residents. Efforts to assist those affected by the flooding are being mobilized, with many community members coming together in support of one another during this challenging time. For now, the focus remains on locating the missing and providing aid to those in need.
