San Antonio

The death toll from severe flooding in San Antonio, Texas, has tragically risen to 13, as authorities confirm that all missing persons have been accounted for following intense rescue operations. The flooding, which began early Thursday, resulted from over 7 inches (18 centimeters) of rainfall falling within just a few hours, causing significant flash floods across the city.

Rescue Operations and Casualties

In response to the crisis, firefighters have rescued more than 70 individuals from various flooded areas, with many reports indicating people were trapped in trees after their vehicles were swiftly overtaken by fast-rising waters. Among the deceased, 11 victims were found in the Perrin Beitel search area along Salado Creek, while one additional victim was located several miles upstream. So far, the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified 10 of the 13 victims, comprising eight men and two women between the ages of 28 and 67.

The flash floods prompted emergency services to handle numerous water rescue requests after 5 a.m. local time on Thursday. Victims primarily found themselves in their cars when the floodwaters rapidly escalated, forcing them to escape to higher ground, including climbing trees to avoid being swept away.

Search and Rescue Efforts

The comprehensive search operations are being conducted by the San Antonio Fire Department, the San Antonio Police Department, and Texas A&M Task Force 1. Crews have concentrated their efforts on Salado Creek and Leon Creek while utilizing search dogs to assist in locating missing individuals.

As part of the rescue efforts, local authorities have had to navigate through the considerable damage inflicted upon infrastructure, with 15 low-water crossings severely affected, complicating rescue operations and emergency responses.

Severe Weather Conditions

This catastrophic flooding is compounded by the severe weather that has also led to the confirmation of two tornadoes in nearby Hays County, with reported wind speeds ranging from 65 to 85 mph. The unfavorable weather conditions contributed to the difficulty of rescue and recovery operations during this emergency.

City’s Response

Despite the waters receding by mid-morning on Thursday, weather forecasts indicated the potential for additional rainfall, which could lead to further flooding in already saturated areas. Mayor Ron Nirenberg expressed deep compassion for the victims’ families during this time of crisis and emphasized the city’s commitment to continued rescue efforts in light of the ongoing threat posed by unpredictable weather.

Community Impact and Safety Precautions

The flooding has not only claimed lives but has also significantly impacted the local community. Residents are urged to remain vigilant for worsening conditions, given the potential for additional downpours. Emergency services continue to prioritize public safety and have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas.

As the community comes to terms with the devastating effects of the flooding, local authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected.
