SAN ANTONIO, Texas — SAWS crews have taken over a busy stretch of East Hildebrand Avenue in San Antonio, and drivers who rely on it will be detouring for months. The road closed Monday between McCullough Avenue and Devine Road so the San Antonio Water System can replace aging water lines.
The city Public Works and Capital Delivery department warned of the shutdown last week and posted a detour map for drivers who normally cut across Hildebrand near Olmos Park. Preliminary work on the job began Oct. 21.
The utility is replacing about 4,600 feet of water mains that have broken repeatedly. The Hildebrand site is one of three construction areas in a larger main replacement package, and the work carries a price tag of $11.3 million.
Crews are working in phases, with set timeframes for each section of the corridor. SAWS expects the intersection of McCullough and Hildebrand to reopen in roughly four weeks, while the full project is scheduled to stretch into spring 2027.
Customers along the route may also see brief water outages when crews tie the new pipe into the existing system. SAWS has said it will notify affected homes and businesses ahead of any shutoff, and it plans to use traffic control to limit lane closures beyond the main work zone.
Businesses along the corridor were told about the closure in advance, though some worry about how customers will reach them while the road is shut. The city has urged anyone who usually takes Hildebrand to pick another route for now. SAWS says the new pipe is meant to keep water service dependable for its customers for years to come.
