SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The San Antonio Spurs did not need a big scoring night from Victor Wembanyama on Monday. Seven players reached double figures, and the Spurs ran past the Utah Jazz 119-97 at home to stretch their winning streak to five games.
Rookie Dylan Harper led the way with 17 points. Stephon Castle scored 16, Keldon Johnson had 15, and Wembanyama posted 12 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. De’Aaron Fox added 12 and Devin Vassell 11. The five starters combined for 68 points.
San Antonio shot 60% from the field and broke the game open in the third quarter, winning that period 35-20 to build a lead that reached 25. Utah had pulled within 37-36 in the second quarter but never got back in front after the opening minute. The Spurs also dominated the paint 52-36 and the fast break 26-9, and for the first time this season they held an opponent under 100 points.
Lauri Markkanen scored 22 points with eight rebounds for Utah, which has now lost five in a row.
The quieter night for Wembanyama came a day after the NBA picked him as the West’s top player for the previous week, an award he has now won four times. He averaged 36 points, 10.3 rebounds and 4.33 blocks during a 3-0 week for the Spurs, which ended with his season-best 43-point game as San Antonio handled Minnesota 121-111 on Oct. 31. In that game he also blocked six shots, and the team said he became the first Spur with 40 points and five blocks in one game since David Robinson in 1996.
Monday’s game was the second of a three-game homestand for San Antonio.
