SAN ANTONIO, Texas — San Antonio heads into Election Day with a midterm record already on the books. Bexar County voters turned in more than 520,000 ballots before Tuesday, the most ever cast early in a midterm there, the Bexar County Elections Department reported.
Early voting ran from Oct. 19 through Oct. 30. Even with the record, the early total equals only about 39% of registered voters in the county, which leaves plenty of people still to vote Tuesday. Roughly half a million of the early votes were cast in person, and the county also logged more than 24,000 ballots by mail plus about 1,500 limited ballots.
Neighboring counties ran even hotter by percentage. Kendall County reported early turnout near 49%, Comal County about 42% and Guadalupe County about 37%.
Local questions share the ballot with the statewide races. San Antonio voters are deciding whether to reauthorize the PreK 4 SA program, several school districts including Northside, San Antonio and South San have property tax proposals, and Northside and San Antonio ISDs also have bond measures. In Converse, voters will decide whether to end VIA bus service in the town.
Vote centers in Bexar County open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m., and anyone in line at closing can still cast a ballot. Voters are not tied to their home precinct and may use whichever county vote center is most convenient on Election Day, and the county posts live wait times for each location online.
Voters need an accepted photo ID such as a Texas driver license, a Texas personal ID card or a U.S. passport. Those who cannot reasonably get one can sign a declaration and show supporting ID. VIA Metropolitan Transit is offering free rides to Bexar County polling places all day to riders who show a valid Bexar County voter registration card.
