Bexar County Sets Early Voting Record in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — More voters in San Antonio and the rest of Bexar County have already cast ballots for the Nov. 3 midterm than in any previous early voting period in county history, election officials said after polls closed Friday night.

The county elections department put the unofficial tally at more than 527,000 ballots. Roughly 500,000 of those came from people who voted early in person, with more than 24,000 mail ballots and just over 1,500 limited ballots added to the count.

That works out to turnout of 39.24% so far. Early totals passed the county numbers from the 2022 midterm earlier in the week and already top the 38% turnout of the 2018 midterm, though they remain under the 44.5% seen in the 2024 presidential race.

Anyone who has not voted gets one more chance Tuesday, Nov. 3. Voting runs from 7 in the morning until 7 at night statewide, and anyone already standing in line when the doors close still gets to vote. Bexar County residents may vote at whichever county vote center is handiest, and its elections office posts a map of locations along with a wait-times tool launched in October.

Voters need one of seven accepted forms of photo ID. Most can be expired up to four years, and voters 70 and older may use an older expired ID. A voter without ID can cast a provisional ballot and has six days to show it to the county registrar.

Bexar County ballots include races for governor, U.S. Senate, county judge and district attorney, along with school funding measures.

Mail ballots must normally arrive by 7 p.m. on Election Day, although some mailed by that time can still be counted if they reach the county by 5 p.m. on Nov. 4. The county elections office also posts personalized sample ballots so voters can study the races ahead of Tuesday.
