SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Alamo Colleges District board will need a new member for its East Side seat after trustee Gloria Ray stepped down, the San Antonio community college district said Thursday.
Ray, who represented District 2 and served as the board’s vice chair, turned in her resignation effective Oct. 25. She first won the seat in November 2020, and her term was set to run through 2028. No reason for her departure was made public.
Trustees will hold a special meeting Nov. 10 to formally accept the resignation and to lay out how applicants will be taken and reviewed for an interim appointment to the District 2 seat, whose territory takes in much of the East Side.
Board Chair Joe Alderete Jr. credited Ray with years of service to the district and its students. Chancellor Mike Flores called her a champion for students and pointed to her backing of expanded workforce training.
Before joining the board, Ray spent 27 years at the former Kelly Air Force Base, retiring as a senior official. She later chaired the district’s Citizens Advisory Committees on capital projects and was president of the Fiesta San Antonio Commission in 2021, and she has long been involved in San Antonio’s Martin Luther King Jr. March Commission. On the board she pressed for more resources on the East and Northeast sides.
During her time on the board, enrollment across the five-college system, which includes Northeast Lakeview, Northwest Vista, Palo Alto, St. Philip’s and San Antonio colleges, grew from about 68,000 students to more than 100,000 this fall.
