Shelf cloud rolling in ahead of a storm

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — After several dry weeks, San Antonio is heading into a wetter, cloudier stretch, with the best chance of rain arriving Thursday as moisture from the Pacific spreads into South Texas.

Tuesday brings a modest chance of showers, rising to about 40% by the afternoon and early evening. Rain that does fall should be light, with most spots getting less than a quarter inch, and clouds should hold highs in the upper 70s. Wednesday looks mostly the same or a bit drier, with only stray showers and a little more sun.

Monday kicked off the change. Highs in the San Antonio metro area were expected in the low 80s, while the Hill Country from Kerrville to Fredericksburg stayed cooler, in the upper 70s.

The bigger setup comes Thursday. A disturbance from the west will team up with leftover moisture from Vance, a Pacific storm expected to brush Mexico’s southwest coast midweek. Forecasters put San Antonio’s rain chance near 60% Thursday, with heavier tropical downpours possible from midday into the evening. The heaviest totals are expected west of I-35, while areas east of the city should see less.

The National Weather Service has the city in a level 1 of 4 risk for excessive rainfall Thursday, the lowest tier, which means a few isolated spots could see flooding. Overall the flood risk is considered low.

Showers could linger Friday at roughly a 40% chance. By Halloween on Saturday, rain odds drop to around 20% to 30%, and trick-or-treaters should get mostly dry, comfortable conditions with temperatures in the 70s.

The extra clouds and rain should help keep temperatures in check through the end of the week.
