Remembering a Bright Star: The Legacy of Alan Gonzalez

It is with heavy hearts that the vibrant community of McAllen, Texas, gathers to remember the life of Alan Gonzalez, a passionate educator and beloved volunteer who left us far too soon. Alan passed away on December 21, 2024, at the young age of 25, leaving behind a legacy of joy, kindness, and commitment to education.

A Life Full of Promise

Born on September 24, 1999, Alan was the cherished son of Daniel and Dora Leticia “Letty” Gonzalez. Alongside his loving parents, he is survived by his devoted older siblings, Amanda Danielle and Adrian Gonzalez. Alan’s family was his foundation, and he often expressed immense gratitude for their support throughout his life.

Having lost his paternal grandparents, Patricio “Pat” and Nora R. Gonzalez, and maternal grandparents, Eusebio Andres and Dora C. Gonzalez, Alan carried the warmth of their memories with him in every endeavor he undertook.

A Scholar with a Heart for Teaching

Alan’s educational journey took him to the University of the Incarnate Word, where he graduated in 2022 with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. He didn’t stop there. With minors in Reading, Special Education, and Kinesiology, he was a true testament to hard work, making the Dean’s List and volunteering for numerous events, like those with the UIW Special Olympics.

His dedication to education was evident from the start. As a founding member and Historian of the UIW Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society, Alan was recognized with the National Society of Leadership & Success Award in Spring 2021—an honor reflecting his leadership and drive to uplift others.

A Passionate Educator at Heart

After gaining valuable experience through student teaching at Franklin Elementary in Fall 2022, Alan stepped into his first teaching role in San Antonio, where he taught for five semesters. In Spring 2023, he joined Woodlawn Academy and later transferred to Carvajal Elementary in Fall 2023. His enthusiasm and commitment to his students did not go unnoticed, as he was named a 2023-2024 Rising Star Teacher at San Antonio ISD.

Alan was known for his energetic teaching style, often trading dress shoes for tennis shoes to race against his 2nd-grade students during recess, effectively making learning a fun and engaging experience. His generosity shone through as he frequently purchased Dollar Store prizes for his students—always putting their needs first.

Inspirational Coach and Community Member

Alan brought his love for sports into the classroom, eagerly participating in staff vs. student volleyball games and coaching middle school girls’ volleyball teams. He was an accomplished volleyball player, serving as a three-year captain and libero for the UIW Men’s Club Volleyball Team. Additionally, he was a state-certified volleyball referee, and his passion for the sport continued throughout his adult life.

Outside of his teaching career, Alan expressed his creativity through playing the piano, painting, and soaking in the vibrancy of live music with friends and family. His fun-loving personality quickly earned him the nickname “Mr. Fun”, as he effortlessly made everyone around him feel valued and appreciated.

Honoring Alan’s Memory

The community gathered for Alan’s visitation starting on December 29, 2024, followed by a heartfelt funeral service on December 30, 2024, at La Trinidad United Methodist Church. An all-girl group honored him as pallbearers, emphasizing the significant impact he had on many lives.

As we celebrate the life and legacy of Alan Gonzalez, let us remember his passion for teaching, his dedication to his students, and the warmth he brought to our community. Though he may have left this world too soon, his spirit will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him and learning from him.
