San Antonio Woman Hospitalized After Dog Attack

A woman was hospitalized after a brutal and unprovoked dog attack involving three American Staffordshire Terriers on April 23 at approximately 8:30 a.m. The incident took place in the 10000 block of Prescott Drive, a residential area near Marbach Road.

The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was attacked by the dogs that ran from a nearby yard. During the assault, the woman fell and was bitten multiple times on her upper body. As the chaos unfolded, she fought off the dogs for several minutes while bystanders attempted to help by yelling and honking car horns to distract the aggressive animals.

Among the onlookers was Pete Ramos Jr., a Vietnam veteran. Ramos, noticing the commotion while driving, recognized the seriousness of the situation and intervened. He used a stick to strike one of the attacking dogs, helping to save the woman from further injury. Despite his own health issues, Ramos felt a moral obligation to assist in the life-threatening struggle.

The woman sustained extensive injuries, primarily consisting of lacerations to her upper body, left arm, and wrist. Due to the severity of her injuries, she underwent multiple surgeries, and her attorney, Christopher Garza, revealed that she may also have a fracture. There are indications that the victim will require additional surgeries as part of her recovery process.

Following the attack, the owner of the dogs received ten criminal citations, including three counts of failing to prevent a bite and three counts of animals roaming off property. Alarmingly, one of the dogs had a documented history of biting, having been quarantined after an earlier incident in March.

In the aftermath of the attack, the owner voluntarily surrendered all three dogs to Animal Care Services (ACS) for euthanasia. This incident is part of a growing concern in San Antonio, where there has been a disturbing trend of severe dog maulings over the past two years, prompting increased public safety worries.

Local authorities are urging residents to report any aggressive or loose dogs to ACS by calling 311. The victim, as she continues her recovery, has expressed a desire for legislative changes aimed at improving dog safety within neighborhoods to prevent future attacks. She emphasizes the need for laws that will help protect the community from dangerous dogs.

As this incident highlights the potential dangers posed by aggressive dogs, it serves as a critical reminder for pet owners to manage their animals responsibly, ensuring they are contained and properly trained. This incident has stirred discussions around the need for more stringent regulations regarding dog ownership in San Antonio and the protection of residents from aggressive animals.
