San Antonio – The community is mourning the loss of a beloved pharmacist and esteemed community leader, who passed away recently after a lifetime dedicated to serving others. Born in Poteet, Texas, she was the daughter of high school educators Adon and Montel Gladney Duncan. She was widely recognized for her commitment to her profession, caring demeanor, and active involvement in various local organizations.
A valedictorian of the Rusk High School Class of 1961, she went on to excel academically at the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1966. During her time at UT Austin, she was an active member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. That same year, she married dentist Joe Edwards, and the couple celebrated 58 years of marriage.
In 1972, they settled in San Antonio, where she would spend the remainder of her life. Known for her passion for pharmacy, she found fulfillment in helping her patients and was known for her infectious spirit. Although she briefly took time off to raise her two sons, John and Jeff Edwards, she returned to her career and dedicated herself to her work at Eckerds, which later became part of CVS, until her retirement in 2020.
Even after her retirement, she continued to maintain her pharmacy license by completing ongoing educational courses. Additionally, she served as a pharmacy preceptor at CVS, where she mentored numerous pharmacy students, shaping the next generation of pharmacists.
Her distinctive East Texas accent and keen sense of style made her a memorable presence in the community. She was deeply involved in several organizations, including the San Antonio Dental Auxiliary, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and her local church, First Presbyterian Church. Recently, she became a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, reflecting her dedication to her heritage and community.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Edwards, their two sons, along with Jeff’s wife, Liz, and grandchildren, Reid and Natalie. Her legacy extends to her sister, Jeanne Waggener, and her husband Tommy, who reside in Waco, as well as her nephew, Jay Sartain, his wife Katie, and their children, who live in Houston.
A visitation is scheduled for Thursday, June 5th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Porter Loring Mortuary, allowing friends and family to pay their respects. A private family burial will take place at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Friday morning, June 6th. In honor of her life, a celebration of life service is set to occur at First Presbyterian Church in San Antonio at 1:00 pm on the same day.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to the First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio or the Rusk High School Alumni Association, Class of 1961. This will ensure that her legacy continues to impact the community she cherished.
