Laredo, Texas – Authorities Recover Stolen Vehicles in Recent Incidents Involving Drug and Theft Charges
Texas authorities have successfully recovered several stolen vehicles following two separate incidents that highlight ongoing issues with vehicle theft and drug-related crimes. In the latest events over the weekend, significant law enforcement efforts led to the recovery of a stolen 2023 Dodge TRX and the arrest of a suspect involved in transporting stolen vehicles across the border.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) conducted a traffic stop on a Ford F-250 that was hauling the stolen Dodge TRX on a flatbed trailer at the intersection of Market Street and Springfield Avenue in central Laredo. Upon investigation, it was confirmed that the Dodge TRX was reported stolen from San Antonio. The investigation related to this incident is ongoing, as law enforcement continues to unravel the details surrounding the theft and the suspects involved.
In a separate incident, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested Rico Eliazar Villarreal on May 21 at approximately 8:50 p.m. Villarreal was attempting to enter Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, with a vehicle that had also been reported stolen from San Antonio. His arrival at the Juarez-Lincoln International Bridge raised suspicion since the bridge does not have a pedestrian lane, prompting CBP officers to intervene.
During the inspection, Villarreal provided a negative declaration regarding his intentions, but a pat down revealed 2.73 grams of meth, various drug paraphernalia, and a .22 caliber handgun containing two rounds. Villarreal claimed he was merely trying to go to Mexico for a meal and return. However, upon further questioning, he abandoned a black 2021 GMC Sierra on the bridge before officers could approach him. The GMC was found to have been stolen just six hours prior from a residential area in San Antonio.
Villarreal explained that he was doing a favor for a friend and intended to drop off the GMC at Walmart in Nuevo Laredo but expressed uncertainty about whether the vehicle was stolen. Eventually, he admitted to knowing the GMC was stolen after being read his rights. He was subsequently charged with the import or export of a stolen motor vehicle.
On May 14, a separate incident involving a vehicle pursuit resulted in the arrest of three teenagers in Laredo. These individuals were apprehended following a brief chase that began when officers spotted a white 2021 Kia Forte which had been reported stolen earlier that day around 8:05 a.m. The stolen Kia was located at approximately 1:07 p.m., leading to a pursuit that concluded when the driver lost control and crashed the vehicle at the intersection of San Bernardo Avenue and Mann Road.
After the crash, two passengers exited the vehicle and fled on foot but were captured shortly afterward. Rausel Andrei Fonseca Jr., 17, was identified as the driver of the stolen Kia and has been charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle and evading arrest. The two passengers, both 18-year-old males, were also apprehended and charged with evading arrest after receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the crash. The investigation into the theft of the vehicle is ongoing, and further charges may be forthcoming.
These recent events illustrate a troubling pattern of vehicle theft and criminal activity in the Laredo area. Law enforcement agencies are actively engaging in various measures to combat these issues, including collaborative efforts between local, state, and federal authorities to increase vigilance against vehicle thefts and related drug crimes.
