San Antonio – A shooting incident on Thursday evening has left the community in shock, following the death of 46-year-old Ralph Kenneth Henderson. The shooting took place around 7:38 p.m. in the 20000 block of Liedecke Road, where Henderson was found with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries Friday afternoon. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled his death a homicide.

Along with Henderson’s tragic fate, an 11-year-old girl walking nearby with her mother was grazed by gunfire during the incident; fortunately, her mother was uninjured. The reason behind the shooting is still under investigation, and authorities are currently searching for the suspect who remains at large.

This latest incident contributes to a growing concern over gun violence in San Antonio. In the past 72 hours alone, six individuals have lost their lives due to gun-related incidents, as noted by local anti-violence advocate Adrianne House. The alarming rise in violence has led to discussions about potential disconnects among youths that may be fueling this increase. House emphasized the prevalent trauma within the community and highlighted the critical need for support from community organizations and younger individuals to help combat gun violence.

In response to these ongoing issues, House plans to host a community walk on June 19, aimed at raising awareness and promoting peace within the neighborhood. She has extended an invitation to young participants to join in this endeavor. The motivation behind her commitment to fighting gun violence is deeply personal; her own son was paralyzed in a 2017 drive-by shooting, intensifying her resolve to effect change within the community.

As residents grapple with the aftermath of Henderson’s death and the subsequent wave of violence, a community forum was convened to discuss concerns regarding the city’s safety and police response to violence. Several local residents voiced their frustrations about the effectiveness of law enforcement in addressing these critical issues. The San Antonio Police Department is actively continuing its investigation into the recent shooting as well as the broader implications of rising gun violence within the city.

The emergence of such disturbing incidents has reignited conversations on public safety, mental health, and community resources. Local leaders and citizens alike are recognizing the urgent need for collaborative efforts to address the underlying causes of gun violence, particularly among younger generations. As the community continues to mourn those lost and injured, solidarity and activism may emerge as key components in the quest for a safer San Antonio.
