San Antonio – A devastating flash flood in northeast San Antonio on Thursday morning has claimed at least 11 lives, with emergency crews actively searching for four additional individuals reported missing. The flood, caused by slow-moving storms that dropped a record-breaking 6.12 inches of rain, has led to a significant response from local emergency services.

The San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) has been leading the search and rescue operations in affected areas, including Perrin Beitel and Austin Highway, and U.S. Highway 90. Drones and K-9 units are being deployed to aid in locating those still missing. As the search efforts continue, the initial death toll, which was reported as five on Thursday evening, has since risen to 11 confirmed fatalities.

In addition to the lives lost, the floodwaters have resulted in ten successful rescues by the SAFD, while two individuals managed to escape from the floodwaters independently. The severe weather led to more than 70 emergency calls regarding rescues and high-water incidents throughout the city.

Recovery efforts are anticipated to extend over several days, with the Texas A&M Task Force 1, a federal search-and-rescue team, joining local authorities to assist in the ongoing operations. The flooding also washed away fifteen cars, necessitating extensive recovery work along the Salado Creek.

As recovery teams work tirelessly, three of the deceased individuals have been identified: Martha De La Torre Rangel, 55; Matthew Angel Tufono, 51; and Victor Manuel Macias Castro, 28. Mayor Ron Nirenberg has publicly expressed condolences to the families of the victims and has acknowledged the efforts of first responders during this tragedy.

The weather conditions preceding the flooding prompted the National Weather Service to issue warnings, and concerns remain regarding river flooding. Both the Medina and San Antonio rivers are expected to remain high throughout the Father’s Day weekend, with floodwaters slowly receding but maintaining elevated water levels. The instability of numerous low-water crossings has raised further concerns within Bexar, Comal, and Hays counties, resulting in various road closures.

Adding to the impact of the storms, over 57,000 customers experienced power outages across Texas. The severe weather also led to multiple structure and transformer fires throughout the region. As conditions evolve, emergency services continue to monitor high-water reports and act swiftly to respond to any further incidents.

This flooding event marks the rainiest day in San Antonio in 12 years, highlighting the city’s vulnerability to intense weather conditions. The swift response of emergency agencies has been crucial in managing the ongoing crisis, as the community rallies together to aid those affected by this devastating natural disaster.
