The new institution will be the third largest public research university in Texas, boasting a $2.2 billion budget and $1.1 billion endowment, aiming to bolster local healthcare and economic growth.

San Antonio – The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio have received official approval to merge, an unprecedented move aimed at creating one of the largest comprehensive research institutions in Texas. This decision, approved by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), will combine the two entities into a singular institution with an anticipated enrollment of around 40,000 students.

UTSA’s current President, Taylor Eighmy, will lead the newly merged institution, which is projected to employ more than 15,900 staff members, 4,000 faculty, and around 1,400 healthcare providers. The merger will significantly bolster the educational and research capabilities of the new institution with an annual research expenditure estimated at $470 million.

The new establishment will find itself ranking as the third largest comprehensive public research university in Texas, trailing only the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University. Alongside that, the budget for the university is set to be around $2.2 billion, paired with an endowment of $1.1 billion and an expected direct annual economic impact of over $6 billion.

Officials highlight that this merger will encourage collaboration between various departments and improve academic offerings, ultimately aiming to create new programs across multiple disciplines including STEM fields, health management, and biosciences. Moreover, it is expected to foster stronger partnerships with local hospitals and military installations to enhance health care and educational services.

Branding for the unified institution will undergo a transformation; however, the UTSA mascot and primary colors will remain unchanged throughout this process. The merger is also viewed as a strategic initiative to retain young talent in the San Antonio area while advancing pharmaceutical development and emerging medical technologies.

A formal notification from SACSCOC regarding the details of the merger is anticipated no later than June 26. The process will include steering committees and task forces charged with the integration of systems and structures from both institutions, setting the groundwork for a smooth transition.

This approval arrives nearly fifteen years after initial discussions regarding a potential merger began, with assessments conducted in 2002 and 2010 paving the way for this significant development. Through this merger, the newly formed institution aims to attain recognition from the Association of American Universities, which could enhance its competitive standing on the national stage.

The medical and research focus of the new institution will encompass six healthcare schools that emphasize not only health care and biosciences but also national security and data science. The combination of these resources and expertise is anticipated to yield significant advancements in research, education, and community partnerships aimed at addressing critical health issues.

The merger represents a landmark moment for higher education in San Antonio, with the potential to reshape the educational landscape and generate meaningful change in research and community service efforts. The future structure and offerings of the merged institution promise a transformative impact on the region and beyond.
