San Antonio – A man has been arrested for murder following a tense standoff in the Southeast Side of San Antonio that is connected to a deadly shooting that occurred on Sunday morning. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Mark Criollo, was taken into custody by SWAT units around 1:30 a.m. on Monday.
Police responded to reports of a shooting in the 2200 block of East Commerce Street just before 11 a.m. on Sunday. Upon their arrival, officers discovered a 19-year-old man with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. As of now, the identity of the victim and the cause of death are pending confirmation from the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office.
According to witnesses, the shooting transpired when the victim’s vehicle came to a halt near the intersection of South Polaris and East Commerce streets. Following the incident, police quickly identified Criollo as the suspected shooter and issued a murder arrest warrant for him.
Later that afternoon, around 2 p.m., investigators located Criollo hiding in the backyard of a residence in the 800 block of Potomac. Police established a perimeter around the home to prevent Criollo from escaping while they attempted to negotiate his surrender. During this time, Criollo’s girlfriend exited the house, but Criollo himself refused to come out.
In light of the situation, SWAT units were called to the scene and were able to take Criollo into custody without further incident. It remains unclear whether Criollo was armed during the standoff, as the San Antonio Police Department’s report did not provide this information. A mugshot of Criollo was also not immediately available from the Bexar County Jail following the arrest.
The investigation into the shooting and the events that led to the standoff is ongoing. Officials have stated that this remains a developing story, and further details may emerge as the investigation continues.
This incident has raised concerns in the local community about violence and safety. As more information becomes available, residents are seeking clarity on the circumstances surrounding this tragic event and the actions of law enforcement during the standoff.
Law enforcement is urging anyone with additional information related to the shooting to reach out and assist with the ongoing investigation. The authorities are committed to gathering comprehensive details regarding the case and ensuring justice for the victim.
