San Antonio – A 17-year-old, Jayrobert Rangel, has been certified to stand trial for murder in the 386th Juvenile District Court. This ruling comes alongside six counts of aggravated assault he also faces stemming from a shooting incident that occurred on December 30. Rangel, who has been directly linked to the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Ramiro Alvarado, is now being treated as an adult within the criminal justice system.

The shooting incident took place shortly before 6 p.m. in the 300 block of Adaes on San Antonio’s west side. Homicide detective Chad Tudor reported that Alvarado was found with a gunshot wound to the chest. Witnesses have described Alvarado as a hero, as he attempted to protect his family during the attack, directing them to safety. The scene revealed evidence of violence, with several spent rifle shell casings recovered from an alley where witnesses claimed the gunfire had originated.

Detective Tudor identified Rangel as the sole shooter, stating that he fled into the alley after discharging his weapon towards the back of the family home. The horrific events leading up to the shooting were recorded on security cameras, including footage from a covert federal surveillance camera positioned in the area. In addition to Rangel, at least one other teenager has been charged in connection with the incident, while two additional suspects are still under investigation.

During the court hearing, psychological evaluations highlighted Rangel’s troubled background, detailing a disrupted childhood and substantial harm from past child abuse. The probation officer, Cristal Rodriguez, testified that Rangel had faced multiple previous referrals to the justice system and had failed to engage with rehabilitation services while on probation.

As Alvarado’s family sat in court, their emotional response underscored the gravity of the situation and their tragic loss. The defense attorney, Adam Kobs, made a case for Rangel to be treated within the juvenile system, emphasizing rehabilitation potential. Meanwhile, prosecutor Jennifer McDaniel urged for an adult sentencing, pointing to Rangel’s escalating patterns of violent behavior as justification.

Judge Jacqueline Valdes ruled that Rangel possessed the maturity necessary to be treated as an adult. She cited the seriousness of the charges and the potential risk to the community as driving factors behind her decision. As a minor, Rangel was initially not eligible for bail. However, upon his transfer to the adult system, bail was set at $200,000 for the murder charge and $30,000 for each of the aggravated assault charges, summing to a total of $380,000.

If Rangel manages to post bail, he will be required to wear a GPS monitor and abide by a no-contact order with both co-defendants and the victims. Judge Valdes permitted Rangel to remain at the juvenile detention center for the time being but warned that any trouble would result in an immediate transfer to adult jail.

Rangel’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 25, where proceedings related to the pre-indictment will take place. The outcome of this case remains closely watched by the community, reflecting growing concerns about youth violence and accountability.
