San Antonio, Texas – The San Antonio community is mourning the loss of Tom Morton, a beloved barber, passionate theater enthusiast, and cherished family man, who passed away recently at the age of 72. Tom was well-known for his kindness, humor, and dedication to both his family and the community.
Born on November 29, 1950, in Erie, Pennsylvania, Tom was the son of Thomas Sr. and Arlene Morton. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1968 and later pursued a career in barbering, graduating from Alamo Barber College. For over 50 years, Tom operated his own barbershop, Morton’s The Hair Place, where he built lasting relationships with his clients.
Tom was known for his active involvement in the Laurel Heights United Methodist Church, where he participated in various youth and children’s programs, served on the Drama Council, sang in the Chancel Choir, engaged with the Super Adults group, and contributed to numerous church committees. His passion for the arts also extended to the local theater community in San Antonio. He performed at renowned venues such as the Harlequin Dinner Theater, San Antonio Little Theater, and The Josephine Theater, in addition to local productions at Laurel Heights.
An individual with a gregarious personality, Tom was known for his quick wit and dramatic flair. He cherished moments spent traveling with his beloved wife, Jeanette L. Davis, whom he married on April 15, 1972. Together, they shared simple pleasures like watching University of Texas Longhorns games with their daughters, Valerie and Laurie, and bonding over their shared love for dogs. Tom had a special fondness for every dog he encountered, and he particularly enjoyed playing golf with his father after his father’s retirement from the Army.
Tom’s family life was enriched by his role as “Poppie” to his granddaughter, Charlotte Rush-Morton, a designation he cherished above all. He is survived by his wife, daughters, sister Cindy Furr, numerous nieces and nephews, and extended family, including Crackle, his pet dog, and Wilson, his grand-dog.
Tom passed away preceded by both his parents and his in-laws, James and Marylou Davis, along with other family members. His family has expressed deep gratitude to the team at Methodist Stone Oak Hospital, particularly to a dedicated staff member named Trinh, for their care during this difficult time.
A Memorial Service is scheduled to honor Tom’s life at the Laurel Heights United Methodist Church on Wednesday, July 9th at 11:00 AM, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom’s memory can be made to the LHUMC Chancel Choir, Super Adults, or Christus Children’s Hospital.
Tom Morton’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched as a barber, community member, and loving family man. His contributions to the arts and his unwavering support for his family have left an indelible mark in the hearts of all who knew him.
