She was alongside her husband, James Hutchison Bryan, Jr., leaving behind a lasting legacy of kindness and dedication to her loved ones.

Early Life and Education

Born on October 14, 1963, in Houston, Texas, Elizabeth, known affectionately as “Beth,” spent her formative years surrounded by family. She was the daughter of Barbara Anne Underwood and Royle Edward Blackbird. Beth grew up enjoying summers as a camper at Camp Mystic and Camp Longhorn, located in the picturesque Texas hill country. She attended Kinkaid School in Houston, starting from the sixth grade, and graduated in 1981.

Following high school, Beth earned a degree in Studio Art from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, in 1985, cultivating her passion for creativity and design.

Marriage and Family Life

While studying at Southern Methodist University, Beth met her future husband, Hutch Bryan Jr., during the Buccaneer Days festivities in Corpus Christi, Texas. Their relationship blossomed further as they continued to court while Beth studied abroad in Madrid, Spain. The couple married on June 27, 1986, at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas, and celebrated 39 years of marriage in June 2025.

The couple welcomed their son, James Hutchison Bryan III, lovingly known as “Hutcher,” on November 2, 1999, in Houston, Texas. In early 2002, the family relocated to New York City, where their daughter, Katherine Merritt Bryan, known as “Kate,” was born on December 15, 2003. The family spent several years in Larchmont, New York, where Beth actively engaged in the local community.

Career and Community Involvement

Beth pursued her passion for design by studying interior design in New York, where she built a successful career over two decades. In 2009, she returned to Texas, settling in San Antonio. Throughout her life, Beth was a proud member of the Forest Club in Houston, Larchmont Yacht Club in New York, and Argyle in San Antonio.

Known for her warm generosity and ability to forge lasting friendships, Beth made significant contributions to the communities she was part of in Houston, New York, and San Antonio.
