San Antonio Remembers a Beloved Alumnus: Richard David Hoppstetter II
San Antonio has lost a remarkable son. Richard David Hoppstetter II, a proud graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, passed away at the age of 76 after bravely battling a long illness. With his passing, we reflect on a life full of passion, love, and an impressive career.
Life Journey Begins
Richard was born on October 19, 1948, in the vibrant city of San Antonio, Texas. He was the cherished son of Richard David Hoppstetter and Lucille Bristow Hoppstetter, both of whom have since passed. Growing up, Richard was quite the athlete, excelling in competitive water skiing. He particularly shone in both jumping and tricks, impressing everyone with his skills on the water.
In 1966, he graduated from Robert E Lee High School in San Antonio, set to pursue a path that would lead him to remarkable achievements. His academic journey continued at The University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). While studying, Richard became an active member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, making friendships that would last a lifetime.
A Love Story
While at college, Richard’s heart was captured by his high school sweetheart, Sally Brinkley. On August 27, 1971, the couple officially tied the knot in their hometown of San Antonio, marking the start of a beautiful 53-year marriage. Together, they created a loving family, most notably welcoming their son David Fredric Hoppstetter and later, a grandson, David Fredric Hoppstetter II.
A Flourishing Career
Richard’s career took off as he joined his father’s business, Hoppstetter Foods. His hard work and dedication eventually led him to the position of Vice President and General Manager, where he showcased an impressive strategic understanding of business operations. Later, he took his talents to Sysco Foods of South Central Texas, serving as the Director of Profit Management. Richard’s business acumen made a significant impact in every role he undertook.
Passions Beyond Work
Yet, Richard was not all about work. He loved spending his free time indulging in a variety of leisure activities. His fondness for boating and waterskiing found him often enjoying the waters at Medina Lake. He cherished the moments spent with family at the beach in Port Aransas, as well as his adventures hiking, camping, and backpacking across Big Bend National Park and the stunning landscapes of New Mexico. His enthusiasm for the Texas Hill Country was matched only by his love for Longhorn football, classic rock music, off-road racing, and, of course, beautiful boats and cars.
Gratitude and Remembrance
Richard spent his last two years at Brookdale Nacogdoches, where his family expresses heartfelt gratitude for the compassionate care he received. The kind folks at Suncrest Hospice were also instrumental during his illness, providing comfort and support for Richard and his loved ones.
A Loving Legacy
Richard Hoppstetter leaves behind not just his loving wife Sally, but also a solid legacy of compassion, commitment, and excellence. The family also remembers him fondly alongside his sister, Linda Dalonas and her husband George, sister Luanna Hoppstetter, and numerous brothers and siblings-in-law, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the Hoppstetter family requests that donations be made to a Texas Hill Country flood victim’s fund or any charity of your choice. As the San Antonio community grieves, we celebrate a life that was as impactful as it was joyful, and we remember the joyous spirit of Richard David Hoppstetter II.
