SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Methodist Healthcare, the largest hospital system in San Antonio, has picked longtime HCA Healthcare executive David Shimp as its next president and chief executive officer. He starts Dec. 1.
Shimp will run a network that counts 11 hospitals, 35 urgent care clinics and 10 stand-alone emergency rooms, and he takes over as Methodist goes through its biggest expansion in three decades. The system is a joint venture, owned by HCA Healthcare together with a San Antonio nonprofit health ministry.
He replaces Dan Miller, who became president of San Antonio’s largest system in 2023 and announced in August that he was leaving to lead the HCA East Florida Division.
Since December 2021, Shimp has been CEO of HCA Florida Osceola Hospital, which serves Kissimmee, Fla. There he expanded the heart program, opened four freestanding ERs, put more than $200 million into capital projects and grew graduate medical training to 207 residents and fellows in 17 programs.
This is a return to Texas. From 2017 to 2021 he was CEO of El Paso hospital Del Sol Medical Center, and before that held a senior post at St. David’s Medical Center in Austin. Earlier stops included OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City and Rose Medical Center in Denver, part of more than 20 years with HCA.
In a statement, Shimp said he wants to keep widening access to care as South Texas grows. Erol Akdamar, who leads the HCA American Group, called him a proven leader who builds strong teams. His graduate degree, in health administration, is from Virginia Commonwealth University.
