SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Victor Wembanyama turned in his biggest scoring night of the season Saturday, piling up 43 points as the San Antonio Spurs pulled away from a short-handed Minnesota team for a 121-111 win, their fourth victory in a row.
The Spurs center hit 17 of his 34 shots and added seven rebounds, six blocks and four assists. It was the 10th time he has reached 40 points in a regular-season game and the 11th time overall.
He got to 40 in style. After swatting a 3-point try by Jonathan Kuminga, Wembanyama sprinted the length of the floor and finished with a two-handed dunk. His 3-pointer with 2:40 remaining pushed the lead to 118-107.
Dylan Harper scored 25 points with six assists, and reserve Julian Champagnie chipped in 12 off the bench.
The game swung back and forth. Minnesota erased an 11-point deficit with a 16-0 burst in the second quarter and briefly led by seven, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Wembanyama cut the Wolves lead to 61-60 at the half. He had 24 points by the break.
San Antonio regained control in the third quarter and carried a 93-88 edge into the fourth. A 10-0 run stretched it to 101-88, and when the Timberwolves crept within four, San Antonio pushed back with six of the next eight points.
Minnesota played without Anthony Edwards, who is recovering from knee surgery, and Rudy Gobert, who sat with back spasms. Ayo Dosunmu led the visitors with 27 points and nine rebounds, and LaMelo Ball fouled out after scoring 10.
The win opened a three-game homestand for the Spurs, who host the Utah Jazz on Monday night.
