Gene is survived by his wife, Logan, their sons Corwin and Asa, their wives Abbey and Brooke, and three beloved grandchildren: Reagan, Beau, and Evie Ames. He is also mourned by his parents, brothers, a sister, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

Gene Ames was a multifaceted individual whose life was deeply intertwined with South Texas culture, the Texas Hill Country, and his cherished Guajillo Ranch. He graduated from Alamo Heights High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in both Business Administration and Geology from Trinity University. Gene continued his education at the University of Texas at Austin for graduate studies in geology, where he met Logan, establishing a bond that led to a fulfilling life together.

His love for family was evident, as he dedicated himself to sharing his passions with his sons. He often hosted gatherings filled with laughter, sunset cruises, and his signature culinary creations, fostering cherished memories for his loved ones.

Professionally, Gene was a respected figure in the Oil & Gas industry, founding Ames Energy Advisors and entering partnerships with Bissell Operating and Compadre Resources. He held key leadership roles as Vice President of Exploration & Operations with Sandia Oil and Gas and Venus Exploration, in addition to numerous positions within the Petroleum Technology Transfer Council prior to his retirement.

Gene’s influence extended beyond the oilfield. He actively served in various leadership roles in the community, including as an elected director of the Edwards Underground Water District from 1992 to 1995, president of the San Antonio Public Library Foundation, and president of Respite Care of San Antonio. His commitment to service was also evident in his roles as an usher and Sunday school teacher at Christ Episcopal Church, and through his mentorship of others in the community. Additionally, he was involved politically and held membership in various organizations like the Order of the Alamo and the Cavalier Navy for the Texas Cavaliers.

Gene’s contributions to the geological field were extensive. He was affiliated with several organizations, including the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies, and the Independent Petroleum Association of America. He also served on the Interstate Oil & Gas Compact Commission after being appointed by Texas Governor George W. Bush.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Gene’s memory can be made to the San Antonio Library Foundation, Christ Episcopal Church, or any charity of choice. His legacy of integrity, service, and love for family and community will surely be cherished by all who knew him.
