Corpus Christi, Texas: Christy Rae Hoy, Beloved Mother and Music Lover, Passes Away at 63

Christy Rae Hoy passed away peacefully on May 22, 2025, at the age of 63. Known for her deep love of music and her unwavering commitment to family, Christy’s impact was felt by all who knew her. She is survived by her three daughters—Julie Moreira, Janae Herrick, and Kelly Wood—and five grandchildren.

Born on December 30, 1961, in Corpus Christi, Texas, Christy was the daughter of Ray and Carolyn Hostutler. Growing up alongside her sisters, Gaye and Rachel, she enjoyed a childhood filled with family outings to the beach, competitive tennis, and summer trips to Texas rivers. Her musical journey began early with cherished moments spent singing alongside her father, who played the guitar, fostering a lifelong passion for music.

Christy’s admiration for musicians such as James Taylor and Elvis shaped her formative years, during which she was a dedicated member of her high school choir. At the age of 22, she met Jimbo Hoy, the love of her life, culminating in their marriage on May 20, 1983. Together, they founded a loving home and shared a deep mutual respect. Tragically, Jimbo passed away in 2023, mere weeks from what would have been their 40th wedding anniversary.

The couple initially relocated to Seguin, Texas, in 1989 before moving to San Antonio in 1993, where Christy would spend the remainder of her life. Dreaming of being a mother, she welcomed three daughters: Julie, born in 1985; Janae, born in 1989; and Kelly, born in 1994. As a single working mother, she successfully balanced the demands of her career as a claims adjuster, which she held for over 25 years, and her role as a devoted parent while Jimbo was away working on oil rigs.

Family was central to Christy’s identity. Though she avoided being solely defined by motherhood, her daughters often viewed her as a strong, opinionated, and independent figure. Christy took pride in understanding the unique needs and personalities of her daughters, customizing her parenting approach to guide each of them. She instilled essential values in them, including humor, kindness, determination, and the importance of laughter.

Beyond her role as a mother, Christy was renowned for her caring nature and commitment to helping those around her. She frequently welcomed friends and family into her home, providing both emotional and practical support, showcasing her generous spirit. Her interests included music, art, and shopping, particularly for turquoise jewelry, which often led to playful banter with Jimbo.

Christy had a profound appreciation for music, especially gospel, which resonated with her devotion to her faith. Her passions extended to engaging in deep conversations, often steering clear of small talk, and creating a vibrant family life filled with beloved traditions. She relished experiences such as horse carriage rides and admiring light displays during local festivities.

In her later years, Christy confronted the challenges of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease yet managed to retain her dynamic personality until her death. She spent her final years at Bella Groves memory care, where she found camaraderie and joy among peers, ensuring her legacy of love continued to resonate with those close to her.

In addition to her daughters and grandchildren, she is survived by her sisters, Gaye Mountain and Rachel Webb, along with their families. Christy was preceded in death by her husband, Jimbo Hoy; and her parents, Carolyn and Ray Hostutler. The family has expressed heartfelt gratitude for the compassionate care provided by Bella Groves memory care and Devoted Care hospice during her final days.
