Dallas Community Mourns the Loss of Olympic Torchbearer Michael Fred Richards

Dallas lost a cherished community member, Michael Fred Richards, who passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2025, at the age of 44. His family announced the sad news, marking the end of a life characterized by love, kindness, and service to others.

Michael was born on June 14, 1981, to Fred Richards and Clarinda Mann Richards. He lived with his parents for 41 years in San Antonio before relocating to a group home in Dallas three years ago. The move aimed to bring him closer to his sister, Laura Richards Hines, with whom he shared a strong and devoted sibling bond.

After completing his education at Robert E. Lee High School in 2001, Michael pursued various activities that helped him engage with his community in meaningful ways. Notably, he was selected as an official Olympic Torchbearer during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City when the Olympic flame passed through San Antonio. This honor reflected not only his enthusiasm and spirit but also his beloved status within the community.

In addition to his accomplishments, Michael was recognized for his involvement with local day-habilitation programs, receiving the title of Achiever of the Year in 2016 from the ARC of San Antonio. His deep faith in Jesus Christ led him to engage actively with the ministries at Wayside Chapel, where he contributed his time in various roles, from preparing the church sanctuary for services to assisting in community events such as Vacation Bible School.

Known for his amiable personality and cheerful disposition, Michael was a source of joy for those around him. He was beloved for his heartfelt hugs, friendly mannerisms, and delightful sense of humor, which included teasing family members with favorite jokes. Michael had a penchant for helping others, demonstrating a strong work ethic, and enjoying simple tasks, like collecting the mail, which filled him with pride.

Music played a significant role in his life. A fan of 50s and 60s pop, especially Elvis Presley, he was well known for his impressive impersonations and love for dancing. Michael often had an unforgettable presence on the dance floor, typically being the first to join in and the last to leave, embodying the spirit of fun and connection. His ability to direct the church choir from his pew illustrated his passion for praising God through song.

In addition to his church activities, Michael enjoyed jogging, playing baseball with Lone Star Play Ball, attending Camp C.A.M.P., and spending quality time with friends. He frequently visited Hawaii to be with his sister Laura, her husband Adam, and their family, further fostering their close ties.

Michael’s neighborhood was also integral to his life, where he formed lasting relationships and made countless joyful memories during holidays and special occasions. He is survived by his parents, Fred and Clarinda Richards; his sister Laura and brother-in-law Adam Hines; three nieces, Ellie, Caelan, and Lucy; one nephew, Christopher; along with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Michael was preceded in death by his grandparents and two infant nieces.

A Celebration of Life Service is scheduled for Monday, July 7th, at 1:00 pm at Wayside Chapel, where family, friends, and community members will gather to honor Michael’s legacy. For those wishing to commemorate Michael’s impact, memorial gifts may be directed toward Hope Stories or Wayside Chapel’s Masterpiece Ministries.
