San Antonio, Texas — Dr. Anthony B. Constanzo, a prominent figure in education and community service, passed away on July 16, 2025, at the age of 95, surrounded by his loving family. Known affectionately as “Tony,” he was celebrated for his dedication to fostering a passion for learning and his commitment to community development throughout his extensive career.

Born on March 23, 1930, in San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Constanzo was the son of Louis Constanzo and Concetta Talerico, second-generation Italians from Lucciano, Italy. His parents established Constanzo Brothers’ Farms in Von Ormy after working at Breckenridge Farms, cultivating in him a strong work ethic. Dr. Constanzo graduated from South San High School in 1948, and he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Lutheran College in 1952. Following this, he served two years as a corporal in the U.S. Army.

Continuing his educational journey, Dr. Constanzo completed a Master’s in Education, Administration, and Supervision at Trinity University in 1957, before earning a Doctorate in Education and Administration from Nova University in 1984. Over the course of 42 years, Dr. Constanzo held several key positions, including Assistant Principal, Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and ultimately served 19 years as Superintendent for East Central ISD. He briefly acted as Interim Superintendent for Comal ISD before retiring.

Even after retirement, Dr. Constanzo remained active in the education sector, consulting for Vitetta Architecture in Educational Program Development. His commitment to community service was evident through numerous roles, including serving as Mayor of the Better Jobs Committee, an elected representative on the Texas Commissioner of Education Advisory Cabinet, and holding board positions in several charitable organizations, including the Challenger Learning Center of San Antonio, the Comal Public School Foundation, and the Bexar County Economic Development Board.

Dr. Constanzo’s accolades reflect his significant impact on education, including the Freedom Foundation George Washington Honor Medal, recognition as a Texas Superintendent of the Year finalist in 1985, and multiple awards from various educational bodies. In honor of his contributions, the East Central High School Math/Science building was named in his recognition.
