San Antonio, Texas – Dr. Anthony B. Constanzo, a highly esteemed educator and influential community leader, passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on July 16, 2025. Surrounded by family, Dr. Constanzo’s legacy is marked by his deep commitment to educational improvement and community service, touching countless lives over his extensive career.

Born on March 23, 1930, in San Antonio to Italian immigrant parents Louis Constanzo and Concetta Talerico, Dr. Constanzo’s early life on a family farm instilled in him the values of hard work, discipline, and service. He graduated from South San High School in 1948 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Lutheran College in 1952.

Dr. Constanzo served as a corporal in the U.S. Army for two years before pursuing higher education. In 1957, he obtained a Master’s degree in Education, Administration, and Supervision from Trinity University. His pursuit of knowledge continued, culminating in a Doctorate in Education and Administration from Nova University in 1984.

With a robust career spanning 50 years in education, Dr. Constanzo spent eight years as a teacher and coach, followed by 42 years in various administrative roles. His positions included Assistant Principal and Principal of several middle and high schools within Northeast Independent School District (NEISD) for 12 years and Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Instruction for six years. He made history as the First Associate Superintendent for Instruction, Personnel, Transportation, and Maintenance at NEISD, serving for five years. His most notable role was as Superintendent at East Central Independent School District, where he worked for 19 years and later assisted Comal Independent School District as Interim Superintendent for eight months during a transition period. Even after retiring, he continued to influence educational development as a consultant for Vitetta Architecture.

Dr. Constanzo’s contributions extended beyond the classroom, as he engaged actively in community service and leadership roles. He was appointed Mayor of the Better Jobs Committee and served on various educational and community boards, including the Challenger Learning Center of San Antonio/Brooks Aerospace Foundations. Dr. Constanzo was involved with the Rotary Club of the Highlands and Phi Delta Kappa, reflecting his dedication to service and education.

His work earned him multiple accolades, such as the George Washington Honor Medal and the Trends in Education Award from the Southside Chamber of Commerce. In 1985, he was honored as a state finalist for Texas Superintendent of the Year and named Outstanding Administrator by the Texas Library Association. The Math/Science building at East Central High School was named in his honor, serving as a lasting testament to his impact on education.

Family remained a pivotal aspect of Dr. Constanzo’s life. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Martha, and their son, Michael. He is survived by four children: David, Ted, Timothy, and Gail, along with multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren who cherished their time with him. During his later years at Discovery Village Senior Living at Stone Oak, he received loving care from dedicated caregivers and staff, which his family appreciated greatly.

A memorial service is scheduled to take place on July 28, 2025, at Porter Loring Mortuaries North, with visitation starting at 10:00 AM and the service beginning at 11:00 AM. A celebration of life luncheon will follow from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the East Central School Foundation, Inc., ensuring that Dr. Constanzo’s commitment to education continues to inspire future generations.
