Born on May 11, 1940, in Port Isabel, Texas, Gilbert was raised by his mother after the death of his father when he was just eight years old. He grew up alongside his older brother, learning the importance of hard work and family ties from an early age. He began his career as a commercial fisherman along the Texas coast, adhering to principles of diligence and trust.

In the late 1970s, during a period of economic hardship, Gilbert relocated his family to San Antonio, Texas. It was here that he established Groomer’s Seafood, a business dedicated to providing fresh products and fostering relationships with the community. Under his stewardship, the seafood company flourished, becoming known not just for quality seafood, but also as a pillar of support for employees and families in need, providing numerous job opportunities.

Throughout his life, Gilbert demonstrated immense kindness and support for his family and friends. He was known to attend every sports game, recital, and school event for his children and grandchildren. His dedication extended to teaching essential life skills, including fishing, swimming, and riding bikes, to his sons and grandchildren. His approach to life and work earned him respect as a businessman who treated everyone with dignity.

Gilbert is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Susie Groomer. He is also survived by three sons, Rick Groomer, Michael Groomer, and Russell Groomer, along with numerous grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. His family recalls him not only as a loving husband and father but as a compassionate member of the community.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and three children: Gilbert Groomer Jr., Rebecca Dawn Groomer, and Troy Dana Groomer. His passing has left a profound void in the hearts of those who knew him, as he embodied the virtues of strength, love, and support.

A celebration of Gilbert’s life is scheduled for May 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Grace Bible Chapel in San Antonio, Texas.
