News Summary

Jonathan Joss Gonzales, known for voicing John Redcorn in ‘King of the Hill,’ was tragically shot and killed in San Antonio. The incident is being investigated as a suspected hate crime, following an altercation with neighbor Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, who has been arrested for murder. The fatal encounter occurred after an emotional visit to their former home, marking a significant loss for the LGBTQ+ community and igniting discussions about hate crimes and safety for LGBTQ+ individuals.

San Antonio — Jonathan Joss Gonzales, a 59-year-old actor revered for his voice role as John Redcorn in the animated series “King of the Hill,” was shot and killed in what is being investigated as a suspected hate crime on Sunday evening. The shooting took place around 7:00 p.m. on Dorsey Drive, where authorities found Joss near the roadway suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders attempted to administer life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

In connection with the fatal incident, 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja has been arrested and is facing murder charges. This arrest followed a reported altercation between Joss and Ceja, who lived as neighbors. Prior to the shooting, Joss’s husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, noted that the couple was visiting the site of their former home, which had tragically burned down earlier this year.

According to Kern de Gonzales, moments before the shooting, they discovered the skull of their deceased dog outside their former home, leading to a highly emotional situation. Following this, Kern de Gonzales reported that a man approached them, shouted homophobic slurs, and opened fire. Joss is said to have pushed Kern de Gonzales out of harm’s way, thereby saving his life.

The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) is investigating the case and stated no evidence has surfaced to indicate that Joss’s murder was directly related to his sexual orientation. However, the investigation remains thorough. Reports indicate that there was an ongoing feud between Joss and Alvarez, with police records detailing prior altercations and threats exchanged between the two neighbors. In the last 16 months, police had received multiple calls regarding disturbances, threats, and incidents of violence related to both residences.

Prior to this tragic incident, Joss and his husband had experienced significant harassment because of their relationship, including threats to burn down their home before it was destroyed in the fire incident. These continued hostilities prompted concerns for Joss’s safety and well-being.

Just days before his death, Joss made a public appearance at the ATX TV Festival, where he discussed the upcoming revival of “King of the Hill,” set to premiere on Hulu in August. His involvement in the revival was highly anticipated as he was slated to reprise his well-loved role as John Redcorn, a highlight in his acting career.

Joss married Tristan Kern de Gonzales on Valentine’s Day earlier this year, marking a significant personal milestone that was sadly overshadowed by the turmoil they faced in their neighborhood. Kern de Gonzales has publicly shared that their relationship was marred by threats, hostility, and harassment, contributing to a tense living environment.

The death of Jonathan Joss has not only shocked his loved ones but also the wider community, sparking discussions about hate crimes and the treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to understand the motives behind the shooting and to provide justice for Joss and his family.
