Mission Kayak Resumes River Tours in San Antonio

Kayakers enjoying the scenic San Antonio River

News Summary

Mission Kayak has officially resumed its San Antonio River tours after a short closure. Co-founder David Morin has regained control of the business with plans to enhance kayaking experiences. The company offers rentals starting at $30, focusing on quality experiences rather than profits. Morin, in collaboration with former owner Sarah Neal, aims to develop new routes and social events to enrich community engagement while the local music scene experiences challenges with artist Morrissey’s canceled performances.

San Antonio – Mission Kayak has resumed its San Antonio River tours after a brief hiatus. The company closed in early March as owner Sarah Neal took an archivist position in another city. Now, David Morin, cofounder and majority owner from 2013 to 2017, has retaken control of the business following his family’s settlement in San Antonio.

Morin, a multifamily real estate developer, has reinvested in Mission Kayak, striving to provide enjoyable kayaking experiences rather than focusing on financial gains. The company offers a main tour in the King William section of the River Walk, where canoeing enthusiasts can explore the scenic waterways.

Neal remains partnered with Morin, sharing her previous expertise with the revived business. Currently, kayak rental prices start at $30 for a single adult kayak and $60 for a tandem kayak accommodating two adults. Reservations are encouraged for their one-and-a-half-hour tours, but walk-ins are welcome.

Morin’s passion for paddle sports began at an early age, rooted in his experiences with the Boy Scouts. In addition to the King William route, he is collaborating with local entities, such as the San Antonio River Authority and Go Rio, to explore the development of new routes, including one that highlights the vibrant Pearl area.

Looking to the future, Morin has ambitious plans for Mission Kayak, potentially incorporating unique social events and additional outdoor rental options. To celebrate the business’s resurgence, a grand reopening event is scheduled for late May or early June.

As Mission Kayak reestablishes itself in the San Antonio community, it aims to provide locals and tourists alike with an enjoyable way to experience the city’s beauty from the water. With the partnership of Neal and Morin’s previous ownership experience, the venture looks to create an exciting atmosphere for kayakers.

While Mission Kayak resumes operations, the events surrounding singer Morrissey have captured public attention. The performer recently canceled a show scheduled for May 8 at Boeing Center at Tech Port, which has now been rescheduled for January 10, 2026. This cancellation adds to Morrissey’s history of performance disruptions; he had previously canceled three concerts due to health concerns between 2016 and 2017.

Morrissey was also forced to cancel a May 1 concert in San Diego and a May 3 show in Rancho Mirage, citing a severe sinusitis attack. Alarmingly, recent data indicates that Morrissey canceled 39 percent of his tour dates in 2024 and 28 percent in 2023, prompting discussions about his reliability as a performer. Despite these controversies, he maintains a loyal following in San Antonio and the Mexican-American community.

The intrigue around Morrissey’s music and persona has been documented, namely in a 2005 film that delved into the cult fascination fans have with him. Yet, his history of canceling shows, often before they even begin, leaves uncertainty regarding the likelihood of him completing future performances.

As Mission Kayak breathes new life into San Antonio’s outdoor recreation options amid these unfolding events, both entities continue to draw attention from the local community, albeit for very different reasons.
