San Antonio Gets into Gear for National Bike Month

The wheels are set in motion as San Antonio gears up to celebrate National Bike Month. With the proclamation ceremony already behind us, a series of biking activities and community events are scheduled to take place across the city throughout the month.

National Bike Month: A Long-standing Tradition

Established by the League of American Cyclists in 1956, National Bike Month is a long-standing tradition celebrated every May. Aimed at promoting the benefits of cycling, the month-long event attracts bicyclists from all walks of life. Community leaders, city council members, cycling advocates, and organizers across San Antonio come together during this period to offer diverse bicycling events and initiatives.

Teaming Up for a Bike-filled Month

The kick-off to these celebrations was the annual proclamation ceremony, held at the A Session of the San Antonio City Council. Catherine Hernandez, the city’s Transportation Department director, was accompanied by department officials and several partner organizations during the proclamation.

Apart from the proclamation ceremony, several vibrantly diverse events and pop-ups are slated to take place around the city throughout May. Here’s a glimpse into some of them:

On Cinco De Mayo, the Salado Creek Greenway will be activated by the Transportation Department along with the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization. Two groups will set up pop-ups at either end of the trail — Lady Bird Johnson Park and Wilshire Terrace Park. The public is invited to walk, run or bike this trail and learn more about transportation along the way.

The Future of Cycling & Multimodal Transportation in San Antonio

ActivateSA, a local bike advocacy organization, is hosting a live discussion on bike transportation. The event, penciled for Tuesday, May 14, at the Hermann Sons Ballroom in downtown San Antonio, will cover topics such as updates to the city’s Complete Streets policy and the Bike Network Plan.

Ride of Silence

San Antonio’s International Ride of Silence will honor the memories of cyclists injured or killed on roadways. This event also brings together cyclists from different backgrounds in a show of unity. The ninth annual Ride of Silence is scheduled for Wednesday, May 15.

Bike to Work Day

To celebrate Bike to Work Day, energizer stations will be set up across the city, providing interesting educational materials and breakfast items for bike commuters. Participants also stand a chance to win exciting prizes.
