San Antonio—The death toll from flash flooding in San Antonio has tragically risen to 11, following a severe rainstorm that inundated the area. Rescue operations are ongoing, with several individuals still reported missing around two local creeks.

Emergency responders recovered six additional bodies as search efforts progressed since the initial report of five fatalities on Thursday. Among the deceased, three individuals have been publicly identified: Victor Manuel Macias Castro, aged 28; Matthew Angel Tufono, aged 51; and Martha De La Torre Rangel, aged 55. The San Antonio Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths and is working to identify next of kin.

Canine units and a specialized urban search and rescue task force from Texas-based FEMA are currently assisting in the search operations. Ground searches are being conducted thoroughly across creek beds, low-water crossings, and debris fields, as well as in areas where individuals may have taken refuge during the flooding.

On Wednesday night, San Antonio experienced a record rainfall of 6.11 inches, significantly surpassing the average rainfall for June and July combined. The extreme weather led the San Antonio River to rise from approximately 3 feet to more than 25 feet within a mere two hours. Such intense rainfall is estimated to occur only once every 50 to 100 years, underscoring the severity of the situation.

The flooding swept away multiple vehicles, including 15 that were reported to have been carried into a local creek. In total, around 10 individuals were rescued from trees and bushes, nearly one mile away from where they originally entered the water. Four of those rescued were treated for minor injuries following their ordeal.

As a result of the flooding, San Antonio firefighters responded to over 70 calls for high water rescues by Thursday evening. Many roads in the city were closed due to unsafe conditions, and officials issued warnings advising residents against driving through flooded areas. The flooding also caused power outages, affecting over 57,000 customers across Texas.

San Antonio’s geographic location in “Flash Flood Alley” has made it particularly vulnerable to such extreme weather. Factors including geological characteristics and rapid urban development have exacerbated flooding risks. As the city continues to grow, the alteration of natural water absorption and runoff patterns has led to increased challenges when significant rainfall occurs.

Efforts to locate the missing individuals continue, as local authorities remain determined to bring closure to affected families amid the devastation caused by the flooding. With the weather forecast indicating potential additional rain, residents are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to official safety advisories.
