News Summary

San Antonio has launched a new housing initiative, the Commons at Acequia Trails, aimed at addressing chronic homelessness. The project will offer 201 units of permanent supportive housing and is managed by SAMMinistries. Construction began in April 2025, with completion expected by late 2026. The development aims to provide essential support services for residents, contributing to a broader city goal of establishing 1,000 permanent supportive housing units by 2031. Despite some community concerns, the project is seen as a vital step toward improving the lives of those experiencing homelessness.

San Antonio has officially broken ground on a new housing project aimed at combating chronic homelessness. The Commons at Acequia Trails, set to provide 201 units of permanent supportive housing, commenced construction on April 23, 2025. This development is situated at 7222 Old Corpus Christi Road, in proximity to the San Antonio State Hospital and the Brooks area.

The Commons at Acequia Trails is a critical part of San Antonio’s efforts to address homelessness and is under the management of SAMMinistries (San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries). The expected completion date for the project is late 2026, with plans to fill the units within just 90 days of opening. The total funding for this $56.2 million project comes from a variety of sources, including low-income housing tax credits, the City of San Antonio’s Affordable Housing Bond, contributions from Bexar County, and donations from the San Antonio Housing Trust.

Among the 201 apartments, 80 will be designated for individuals earning up to 30% of the area median income. Additionally, five apartments will be available for those with earnings up to 50% of the area median income, while 116 units will accommodate individuals making up to 60% of the area median income. Each of these units will offer more than just a place to live; residents will have access to on-site services such as primary health care, behavioral health services, life skills training, and social wellness activities.

The Commons at Acequia Trails aligns with San Antonio’s broader initiative to establish 1,000 permanent supportive housing units by 2031. Mayor Ron Nirenberg has underscored this project as a key commitment to tackling chronic homelessness and ensuring dignity for all residents.

The housing development will also feature a supportive services center that spans approximately 10,000 square feet, aimed at providing residents with wraparound services that nurture long-term stability and independence. SAMMinistries has a track record of success, boasting a 97% housing stability rate within its existing permanent supportive housing programs.

Despite its positive intentions, the project has drawn concerns from local neighborhood associations regarding the concentration of subsidized housing. Nevertheless, advocates highlight the potential positive impact on the community and the unique opportunity this project presents for its residents. This marks the third permanent supportive housing initiative in San Antonio, following the establishment of Towne Twin Village and Hudson Apartments, further exemplifying the city’s ongoing commitment to addressing homelessness.

Residents of the Commons will benefit from continued support as they transition from homelessness to stable living environments, akin to positive experiences shared by individuals like Isaac Mercado from Towne Twin Village, who successfully adapted to a new lifestyle and learned essential life skills.

Veronica Garcia, the Neighborhood and Housing Services Director, emphasized the urgency of such projects, illustrating the need for a seamless transition for families moving from emergency shelters to stable living situations. With the Commons at Acequia Trails, San Antonio is taking significant strides toward ensuring that every individual has access to not just housing but also the supportive services necessary to lead dignified lives.
