Shockwaves continue to ripple across the community as the third teenager was arrested regarding a fatal shooting that unfolded amidst an ill-fated firearm sale. The teenager, identified as 18-year-old James Jose Garcia, has been charged with capital murder in connection with the death of 36-year-old Steven Thomas Gagne last month.
Notably, two other individuals, David Francisco Rebelo-Garcia, 19, and an unnamed 16-year-old minor, have already been apprehended and charged with capital murder in this case. Because of legal protocols, the identity of the minor remains undisclosed.
Tragedy Struck Late March
The fatal incident unfolded on the night of March 30, near South Flores Street on the south side. It all started with Gagne, who planned to sell a firearm, meeting the trio in question. What began as a seemingly simple transaction quickly spiraled into chaos.
Reports reveal that one of the suspects took Gagne’s gun, prompting him to draw another weapon. Subsequently, another suspect pulled out a gun and opened fire on Gagne, striking him several times. All three fled the scene, leaving Gagne gravely injured in the streets.
By the time emergency services arrived, Gagne was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the abdomen. Despite attempts to save him, he later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Evidence Leads to Arrests
San Antonio Police Department’s proactive efforts to solve the case led to the arrest of the three teenagers. Crucial evidence came in the form of text and audio messages exchanged among the suspects discussing the planned robbery. In addition, investigators found communication between Rebelo-Garcia and Gagne setting up the sale and meeting location, ultimately aiding in painting a clearer picture of the sequence of events.
Garcia is currently held at the Bexar County Jail on a $300,000 bond. The tragic incident serves as a haunting reminder of the real dangers present in firearm transactions and the dire need for necessary precautions.
