San Antonio – Christina Gomez, the human resources manager at Texas A&M University-San Antonio (TAMU-SA), has resigned amid an ongoing investigation into her questionable use of a university credit card. Her resignation was effective March 31, 2025, following her placement on administrative leave as the university officials examined her spending practices.
Internal documents reveal that between October 2023 and February 2025, Gomez made a total of 211 questionable transactions amounting to $70,135 using the university credit card. A significant portion of these purchases, totaling $6,950, were made without receipts and were still under analysis at the time the review was finalized.
The fraudulent charges were primarily made at several retail locations including H-E-B stores and Walmart, across various San Antonio areas as well as College Station, Helotes, and Corpus Christi. Although none of the individual charges exceeded $500.89, there were multiple instances where Gomez used the card at a Walmart store three times in one day as recently as July 2024.
Gomez acknowledged that her expense reports improperly included personal purchases. Additionally, she used a coworker’s digital signature on lost receipt forms without their knowledge and even employed a coworker’s login credentials to approve her own expense reports.
A review concluded that Gomez’s actions constituted multiple violations of university policies, including guidelines surrounding system resources, information security, IT standards, and procurement card usage. The investigation also identified two other employees at A&M-San Antonio related to the case, though their names have been withheld, and it remains unclear whether they face any consequences for their involvement.
A spokesperson from TAMU-SA emphasized that the university maintains high conduct standards and responds promptly to potential violations. The president of A&M-San Antonio communicated with the chief auditor regarding nine corrective actions designed to prevent similar incidents in the future. This includes banning Gomez from rehire within the Texas A&M University System.
The university police department received the case the same day Gomez resigned; however, as of now, she has not been charged with any criminal activity. Authorities are conducting investigations into allegations of forgery and credit card abuse. Reports indicate that expert Willie Ng finds it alarming that such fraudulent activity could occur within a large university setting and suggested that a more extensive investigation be necessary, potentially involving a larger law enforcement agency.
Currently, there have been no updates from the A&M-San Antonio police on the investigation, with inquiries redirected to the university communications department. Other law enforcement agencies, including the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) and the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), have confirmed they do not have any records pertaining to this investigation in their case management systems.
This incident raises concerns about financial accountability and governance within academic institutions, highlighting the need for strict oversight mechanisms to protect university resources from potential mismanagement or fraudulent activity.
