San Antonio, Texas – Community members are mourning the tragic loss of Hector Javier Vargas, a rising senior at Dillard McCollum High School, who was fatally shot on June 10, 2025. Emergency responders found Vargas in the 400 block of Tidewind Street, where he had been shot multiple times. Despite attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 17-year-old student was the son of Claudia Vargas and had aspirations of owning his own barbershop. Known affectionately as “Baby Hector,” he had developed skills in cosmetology, particularly in doing nails and hair, and was focused on his studies in this area.

Authorities have not made any arrests in connection with the shooting, and the circumstances surrounding the incident are still unclear. The Vargas family is appealing to the public for information that could help solve this case.

Hector leaves behind his mother and five siblings: Omar Rubio, Bianca Rubio, Claudia Rubio, Joe Michael Rubio, and Ashley Olvera. He is preceded in death by family members Jose Vargas, Maria Sepulveda, and Omar Rubio Fallathe.

In response to the financial burden of funeral expenses, the Vargas family is organizing a fundraiser at Jakarandas Bar, aiming to raise around $12,000. Community support is being rallied to help cover these costs as they navigate this difficult time.

A visitation for Hector will take place on June 10, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home in San Antonio. A rosary will also be recited at the funeral home that evening at 7:00 PM. The funeral mass is scheduled for June 11, 2025, at St. Jude Catholic Church at 11:30 AM, followed by a committal service at San Jose Burial Park at 1:15 PM. Pallbearers at the funeral will include Hector Vargas, Jesse Jimenez, Osvaldo Lopez, Tony Vargas, Michael Vargas, Alex Moctezuma, Suriel Moctezuma, and Benjamin Reveles.

This incident has not only shocked the Vargas family but has also left a significant impact on the local community, highlighting the rising concern over gun violence. As investigations continue, there is a growing call within the community for justice for Hector and a reduction in violence affecting local youth.

The life of Hector Vargas serves as a painful reminder of the challenges faced by families in the area. His ambition and youthful spirit resonated with many, and the loss felt by friends and family underscores a collective grief that will linger long after the funeral services are complete.

As the community comes together in mourning, efforts for remembrance and closure will continue. Community members are encouraged to participate in the fundraiser and support the Vargas family during this incredibly challenging time.
