News Summary

San Antonio voters are gearing up for a runoff election on June 7, which will determine the new mayor and several City Council seats. The initial election on May 3 resulted in no candidate securing a majority, leading to this decisive vote. Candidates Gina Ortiz Jones and Rolando Pablos are vying for the mayoral position, while various districts will see new representatives. Registered voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballots at any polling location during early voting and on Election Day. A new mayoral salary has also been approved, reflecting a shift in local government dynamics.

San Antonio voters will participate in a runoff election on June 7, deciding the mayoral race as well as several City Council seats. This comes after the initial election held on May 3, where no candidate received the necessary majority to win outright. Early voting for the runoff will begin on May 27 and will conclude on June 3.

The mayoral race features two candidates: Gina Ortiz Jones and Rolando Pablos. In the preceding election, Ortiz Jones and Pablos emerged as the top contenders among a field of 27 candidates, but neither was able to secure more than 50% of the votes needed for an outright win. The winner of the upcoming runoff will serve a four-year term, a significant increase from the previous two-year term, following voters’ approval of new term limits. Along with the mayoral race, the runoff will also determine representatives for City Council Districts 1, 6, 8, and 9.

Current Council member Sukh Kaur is defending her seat in District 1 against challenger Patty Gibbons. Districts 6, 8, and 9, however, will see new representatives since no incumbents are running. The potential for new leadership reflects a changing dynamic in San Antonio’s local government.

As part of the ongoing adjustments to city governance, the new mayor’s annual salary will increase from $61,725 to $87,800. This change signifies the city’s commitment to enhancing the role of its elected officials in managing the affairs of San Antonio.

Registered voters are reminded that they can cast their ballots at any polling location during both early voting and on Election Day itself. On June 7, polling hours will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. While the deadline to register to vote for this election has already passed, it is important for voters to be aware of the identification requirements. Voters are not required to present their voter registration card; however, they must provide a valid form of identification. Acceptable IDs include a Texas driver’s license, election identification certificate, personal ID, handgun license, military ID, citizenship certificate with a photo, or U.S. passport.

Mail-in voting is also available for certain populations. Applications for mail-in ballots need to be submitted by May 27. Voters utilizing mail-in ballots can track their submissions and must ensure their ballots are postmarked by 7 p.m. on Election Day or returned within five days if mailed from outside the U.S.

In an effort to maintain the integrity of the voting process, voters should be aware that bringing phones or wireless devices within 100 feet of voting stations is forbidden. Additionally, wearing campaign-related clothing at polling places is not permitted to avoid any potential influence on the voting process.

As San Antonio gears up for this important electoral event, local residents are encouraged to make their voices heard and participate in shaping the city’s future. Election results will be made available on various platforms, ensuring that voters can stay updated on the outcomes of this pivotal election.
